Pleasant Mahjong Club is organized by Kristin Gee, founder of Mahjongee, who has taught hundreds of players in the Charleston area and created a vibrant Mahjong community built around great games and meaningful connections.  The Mt. Pleasant Mahjong Club is a welcoming community of players who gather regularly to play American Mahjong using National Mah Jongg League rules. Players enjoy friendly competition, structured league play, and a fun social atmosphere around the table.

  • Yes — the club is designed for players who already know the basics of American Mahjong.

    If you're new to the game, we recommend starting with a Mahjongee beginner lesson before joining the club so you’ll feel confident and ready to play.

  • Players of all experience levels are welcome, however it's important to be comfortable with the rules and be able to keep up with a medium pace of play.  The best way to get better at mahjong is to play regularly, so beginners welcome!

  • The club follows the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules and uses the current NMJL card.

    Friendly reminders and rule clarification are always welcome — the goal is a fun and fair game for everyone.

  • Players compete as part of a team of four. You can join with a full team, or Mahjongee will happily play matchmaker for individuals or partial teams.

    Each week, you’ll play against players outside of your team, and the cumulative team score determines the season winner.

  • No — all Mahjong materials are provided, including tiles, racks, and mats.

    All you need is a NMJL card and welcoming attitude with a slightly competitive edge!

  • No — the Mt. Pleasant Mahjong Club is structured league play, not a formal tournament.

    Scores may be tracked for fun or prizes, but the focus is on community, connection, and great games.

  • Life happens!  This is why we have Club Subs, my favorite thing on the menu! ;) 

    If you are unable to attend a session, we have a sub list you can call on to play in your absence.

  • Part of the fun of the club is meeting new players.

    For that reason, players are rotated throughout the season rather than playing with the same group each week.

  • The club combines well-organized play with a welcoming community. Many players join as individuals and quickly find themselves part of a wonderful group of women who love gathering around the Mahjong table.

  • New seasons are announced through Mahjongee email and Instagram.
